Agricultural development is aimed at increasing crop yields as a prime objective. Current research deals with efficiency of winter crops for economic development of the regional grain industry. New high-yielding grain crop varieties could successfully lead to achieve this goal by increasing total yield and, consequently, grain-growing. This article analyzes winter wheat samples during 2022-2025. The examined varieties successfully overwintered, with the exception of the winter durum wheat variety “Pridonje”, which failed to survive the severe winter conditions of 2023 in the forest-steppe zone. The maximum 1000-grain weight was observed for the varieties “Vasilich” (41.1 g), “Imperatritsa” (40.3 g), and “Ovatsiya” (40.2 g). The highest yield was obtained for the varieties “Imperatritsa” and “Belka”, which outperformed the control common variety by 0.33 t/ha and 0.41 t/ha, respectively. Thus, efficient winter wheat varieties for successful cultivation in the Saratov Region, with yields ranging from 2.64 to 4.22 t/ha under proper agronomic practices, have been identified.
Keywords: winter wheat; variety; winter hardiness; 1000-grain weight; yield.
