The subject of our research is the engine liquid cooling system. The aim of the study is to develop a modernized cooling system by incorporating a cleaning filter, as well as to implement this system on a motor vehicle (MV) under operating conditions. This system is one of the key components of any internal combustion engine (ICE). The temperature regime of the power unit, and consequently its service life and reliability, directly depend on the efficiency of this system. It is noteworthy that, despite the critical importance of this system, MV manufacturers traditionally do not equip it with filters for cleaning the coolant (CL), although the problem of contamination of both the fluid and the system persists. During the operation of the engine and the transport unit as a whole, the CL inevitably becomes contaminated. There are several sources of contamination: corrosion products of the metallic elements of the system (cast iron, aluminum, steel), wear particles from rubber or silicone seals and paronite gaskets, and scale formation resulting from the use of low-quality water or expired Tosol or antifreeze. Improper mixing of different types of CL also leads to system contamination.
A new engine cooling system with an integrated cleaning filter has been developed and patented. A significant distinction of the proposed cooling system from all previously known solutions is the additional installation of a filter in both the CL outlet line to the expansion tank and the CL inlet line. Another stage of the system modernization involves the installation of an electric cooling fan for the main radiator of the UAZ motor vehicle, along with the replacement of all rubber system hoses with silicone hoses, routing them away from the area of high thermal stress near the fourth cylinder.
As a result, the engine operates in an optimal temperature regime, which, in turn, ensures its fuel efficiency, reliability, and durability.
